This book is a bit loaded with linguistic jargon, but its contribution to NLP is so big that it HAS to merit full marks. Today, the concepts behind Erickson's language have been adopted in life coaching, as well as in NLP and hypnosis, and some brilliant guys, among them Paul McKenna and Anthony Robbins owe much of their success to Erickson's work.

I feel that the jargon and detail are essential in order to cover the subject properly. There is much cross-over with the study of English language, and a study of grammar and syntax in particular will enable you to get more out of this book. We are looking at the field of skilled linguistic communication, so we will naturally need to learn some terminology - if I was advised by a doctor who didn't know the names of various internal organs I would be rather worried!

Awareness of the use of language in terms of Bandler and Grinder's Milton Model leads to a greater understanding of how people receive our words - and because of this, it is little wonder that Ross Jeffries jumped on these ideas for his speed seduction concept. The Milton Model concepts can also be used in order to word our propositions in the most amenable manner, this is why I use it when teaching, simply because I want students to feel that they are learning because they WANT to learn, rather than because they HAVE to. The NLP presupposition that choice is better than no choice encapsulates the philosophy behind this. Erickson took this philosophy to a higher level.

The analysis of presuppositions will raise our communication skill, offering a number of personal benefits. One such benefit being a better understanding of the manipulator and his/her tactics.

It's a tough book to study, but it will give you a much better understanding of how syntax affects response.

If you've read Patterns Vol. 1 then you should really read this. Patterns Vol. 1 was very detailed and threw a ton of information at you. There were many techniques and examples given but it was short implementation. That's where Vol. 2 comes in. This book has much of the same info in it as it's predecessor but it glosses over that and gets in deep with how to put all of these techniques together. There's more description on pacing and an emphasis on analogue marking. At the end there are two full length dictations of M.H.E. in action. All of the linguistic devices are spelled out in column fashion making it easy to see how these "patterns" fit together. Reading Vol. 1 and not this would be like watching the first hour and ten minutes of a movie and then not watching the last twenty minutes.

Two excellent books, Part-I and Part-II to be read not just for hypnotherapists, but for communicators in general. The authors offer different models and approaches to the Milton H. Erickson's highly creative and effective hypnotherapeutic work. The Part-II fundamental description makes reference to the external-internal generated experiences (4-tuples) and how those experiences are worked out to develop a trance or other hypnotic outcomes. One experience or a 4-tuple is the perceptive senses that define that experience. The sequence for change in consciousness make emphasis to the client's present external generated experience (information obtained from the client's verbal report and nonverbal cues about his/her present or past experiences) through his/her internal experience. One of the therapist's main skills be performed is the overlapping of experiences needed to achieve the hypnotic state required for therapeutic change. Difference between congruent and resistant clients on the hypnotherapeutic models are established for hypnotic/communication approach effectiveness.

Wonderful, but not easy to read. This is a must for anyone wanting to understand Milton's linquistic approach to hypnosis. Highly recommended.
